Library Loot: 2010 Review

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted alternatively by Marg and Claire that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky (at Marg's this week) any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries!
I wanted to do a retrospective of all the library books that I actually read this year. Lord knows I always get waaaaay more than I could ever read so here are the books I actually read.

I've listed how much money the library saved me based on the Amazon price because that's likely where I would have bought the book; which books I later bought (bold) and the price I paid . (That's right I only paid thirty-five cents for Unholy Magic thanks to Borders Buck and a coupon!) Lastly, I've linked to my reviews (pink).

Does anyone else keep track of how much the library has saved them throughout the year?

I only have one item waiting for me at the library this week:

  1. I often think of how much money I save by using the library but never actually made any calculations - looks like a fun project!

  2. Motheretc, Luckily I keep track of all the books I get from the library on Goodreads and then Excel made it easy to calculate it all! :D I'm a nerd like that though!

  3. What a great illustration of the value of libraries! I read around 200 library books a year - definitely significantly cheaper than if I were to buy all those books!

  4. I also haven't kept track of how much it's saved me, but that's a really good idea! I know that it's probably saved me a ton because I pretty much always read from the library before I buy a book, unless it's from a favourite author.

  5. Oh yes libraries save me so much money! Even with my overdue fees it's still nothing compared to the cost if I bought them. Plus I have room in my house to walk!

  7. I'm staggered at how much you saved. I've never thought of that before but will certainly do so in future, seeing as I tend to read about 20 - 30 books a year from the library!

  8. Claire, Wow! 200 that's a lot! I'm a slow reader apparently! :D

Ashely, I thought it was a good idea. Don't figure anyone else is as interest in it as I am but I thought I'd share anyway! :D

Linda, Oh I didn't think to add in my library fess. You're right even with what I had to pay in fees it was sill a bundle of cash that I saved! I'll keep that in mind for 2011!

Rowena, Yes, although I still spent way to much money on books...notice I conveninetly didn't put up THOSE numbers! :D (Not that I was keeping track either).

Cath, It's nice to quantify my use of library resources. I got a nook for xmas so I'm looking forward to trying out my libraries e-book system this year!

  11. LOL, yeah, rub it in, Mollie!! Those are great numbers really :) It means your library system is very good and they have a really nice selection. I'm jealous.. It'd be fun if I checked what books out of your list is available at my library :)

anyway, seeing your numbers, no wonder you enjoy the library so much! :P

  12. Nath, I'm really lucky Columbus has amazing libraries. We've consistently been rated the top in the nation, either this year or last year we were named Library of the Year so yes, I know I'm lucky! And I take advantage of it! I'm looking forward to trying out the downloadable books section of the library now that I have my nook! They have a pretty good selection there as well!:D

  13. I've never thought about doing this before. Excellent idea - I'm going to track my library loans properly and hopefully the savings will inspire me to use my library more!

  14. Hey Mollie, I just did some number crunching on my blog :) I have to laugh that the total of what you read is less than what I saved! LOL
