Library Loot: November 3 - 9

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted alternatively by Marg and Claire that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky (at Marg's this week) any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries!
I have to share some amazing library news! My library, the Columbus Metropolitan Library, had a levy on the ballot on Tuesday and it PASSED! The final results were  588 of 619 precincts reporting 65% in favor of the levy! That's awesome and I'm so excited! In January they'll be returning to their old hours which they had to cut in 2009 due to state budget cuts.

I'm so excited, although I kind of want to punch in the face the 35% that voted "no"! But the levy passed and I'm pumped for my public librarian friends and for the people of Columbus! I'm so proud of CML, they were named Library Journal's 2010 Library of the Year and are consistently ranked as one of the top libraries in the nation!

On with the loot-
DVD's:
With no cable I've been going to the library a lot for movies!

This was a fun, goofy 80's movie. I'd never seen it before and enjoyed it!

I'd never seen Deliverance but had been wanting to. Aside from Burt's impractial leather, zip up vest on a hunting trip, I thougth this movie stood the test of time pretty well. It was thrilling and suspenseful. Glad I finally got to see this classic!

This was a weird, quirky movie. I enjoyed it for the most part. There was a weird, dark side plot with Zach Galifianakis as a homeless man who is basically harassing our main character played by Paul Dano from Little Miss Sunshine. Really it was kind of a strange movie but I loved the budding relationship between Paul and Zooey. I also loved the family dynamics in the movie.

I picked this one up because my Mom mentioned it when we were discussing The Hunger Games. The movie is set an a futuristic society where the number one television show in the world is The Running Man. Contestants are usually "criminals" (basically people that have somehow pissed off those in authority) who are thrown into a rigged set up where they are stalked and killed. I thought it was pretty good, definitely dated and some of the one liners were cheese-tastic. But overall a pretty good flick!

It's been several years since I've seen this movie and I saw it on the shelf. I love me some Paul Newman!

I can't wait to watch this one! Colin Firth, need I say more?!

I love the Predators and Alien franchise. And it has Adrian Brody!

Note: I don't have all those movies currently checked out. My library allows 5 DVDs to be checked out at a time. I've already watched and returned: Better Off Dead, Gigantic, and The Running Man. Just finished Deliverance last night !

Books:
I loved, loved, loved Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. I started this one last night and was hooked from the first paragraph!
Both my parents read this series and have been hounding me to start it so I better get on it!

I tried to read this in high school but had to stop because it gave me nightmares!
But I want to give it another go!
It's getting chilly and I wanted some good, slow cooker recipes!
BDB, 'nuff said. "Re-reading" the series via audio books!
Have heard great things and am still in the mood for scary stuff!

  1. I was just discussing Stephen King with a friend last night! We have both only read The Shining. I might need to put It on my to-read list. Do you have any other King favorites?

  2. Actually no! I was more of a Koontz girl. I tried reading several King's but never got through them b/c they scared the bejezus outta me! Trying again now that I'm older and...less of a scaredy cat?! We'll see how that goes ;)

I need to get back to the JR Ward series. I stopped after reading Butch's book but also intended to go back to it.

    Enjoy your loot.

  7. I *just* read a review for Dash & Lily's Book of Dares and am definitely looking for this one. I hope my library gets it... if not, I may just buy it. The premise sounds really adorable and I love books that take place in NYC. And during the holidays? At The Strand bookstore? Win!

    Enjoy your loot!

  8. That's quite a haul. I've been lucky, despite the economy the library has been one thing they haven't cut back on yet, and they're still buying new books.

  9. @Marg oooh Yes BDB just gets better!!!! You've got to finish the series!

@Cass Thanks for stopping by! I love John Cusack!

@nath, I didn't go into the levy details. It's a local tax levy that replaces the the initial tax levy from 1986 to help balance the budget. It's an additional $5.24 per month per $100,000 of home value. This allows them to restore hours and services that were lost in 2009 due to state budget cuts. That's the short version! :D

@Gavin Thanks for stopping by! I'm looking forward to trying them out! And it's nice b/c you just throw everything in the slow cooker and let it do its thang! Easy, peasy!

@Christine, I know I can't wait to read it. I haven't had much time to read more but I'm dying to get back to it! The first paragraph had me hooked!

@Misfit You ARE lucky! Libraries are so important but they seem to be one of the first things cut. Keeping my fingers crossed that your library stays safe!
